Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
